Johnny Maher Takes no Prisoners
Johnny Maher made sure he left his mark in yesterday's Galway County Hurling final between Loughrea and St. Thomas'. The big full forward scored 2-2 and flattened anyone who dared to come near him.
Anyone who believes that hurling referees are more lenient than their football counterparts needs look no further than this clip. His actions may have outraged some watching on tv or at the ground, yet it was nearly impossible to not laugh at the absurdity of what happened. How Maher was not even booked at any stage of these two minutes of action is a mystery.
After showing great strength to win his team a penalty, he takes out two St. Thomas' players with his hurley. After consultation with his umpires, the referee takes no action.
Maher then buries the penalty to leave Loughrea just three points down entering injury time. He wasn't finished though and floors another St. Thomas' player with a kick on his way back out the field.
Loughrea failed to score again and St. Thomas' went on to win their first ever Galway County title with a 3-11 to 2-11 win.comments powered by Disqus
